The Head Sacristan role is at the heart of St Brendan’s liturgical life, intersecting with the parish’s key constituencies (clergy, musicians, volunteers, parishioners, visitors). Undertakes the overall preparation of liturgical celebrations. The sacred environment calls for candidates who can facilitate an atmosphere of peace and reverence, and handle stressful or last-minute requests professionally, with discretion, poise and respect.

The head sacristan should have a solid understanding of how liturgies flow–the order of service, the preparations and the tear-down.

Essential Functions

  • Overall preparation of liturgical celebrations.
  • The care and maintenance of all material things of the liturgy. This includes the Eucharistic vessels, the baptismal font, holy oils, altar linens, liturgical books and vestments.
  •  Lights the altar candles, sets up the church and the altar before Mass begins.
  • Prepares the Holy Eucharist for the celebration of the Mass. This includes readying the wine, water, and bread putting them in place before Mass begins.
  • Ensures the vestments, church furnishings, liturgical vessels and decorative objects are kept in good condition and, if necessary, sent for gilding or repair.
  • Ensures the sanctuary lamp has sufficient oil, that the altar cloths are changed regularly, and that the holy water stoups are clean and replenished frequently.
  • Manages the coordination of weddings and funerals.  
  • Maintains the scheduling of all ministers including Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers, Lectors, Sacristans, and Offertory Collections.
  • Maintains candles

Qualities, Skills and Experience:

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing with the church
  • Motivated to work within the Catholic Church environment with a strong commitment to its values
  • Reliable and responsible with a willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team  
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn the intricacies of the vessels, holy oils, altar cloth
  • Demonstrated organizational skills

Candidate must successfully pass a Level II FBI Background Screening and complete Safe Environment Training.
