In 1992, The U.S. Bishops drafted a pastoral letter titled: Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response. It supported teaching the theology of stewardship, emphasized stewardship as integral – not option, and made a clear connection between stewardship and discipleship.
Since that time, this document has been used as the basis for stewardship education and outreach efforts in parishes and dioceses across the world. In fact, in 1997 the National Catholic Stewardship Council used the pastoral letter to create what many consider to be the “stewardship handbook”: Stewardship: Disciples Respond – A Practical Guide for Pastoral Leaders.
The National Catholic Stewardship Council became the International Catholic Stewardship Council (ICSC) in 1999 to reflect its international mission. The ICSC is a professional organization which facilitates stewardship education and provides an opportunity for parish and diocesan level networking events such as regional stewardship days, institutes of learning and the annual international conference. They also serve as a strong resource for stewardship publications and materials.
This year, the international conference will be held in Chicago, Illinois on October 22-25. Click here to visit the ICSC website for more information.
