The Fourth Sunday of Advent – Love
The Fourth Sunday’s theme is love, the heart of the Christian life. As Advent draws to a close, the readings turn our attention to Mary and Joseph, whose trust and openness made room for Jesus to enter the world. Their example invites us to say “yes” to God’s will in our own lives. This week calls us to reflect on God’s boundless love made visible in the Incarnation and to extend that love generously to those around us.

Reflect and Share
As we approach Christmas, we remember the love that came to us through Mary’s courageous “yes.” How is God inviting you to love more deeply this week?

The O Antiphons
The O Antiphons are a beautiful and ancient tradition in the Church, dating back to the seventh or eighth century.
The antiphons are seven short sentences used from December 17-23 that gradually build our expectation as we approach Christmas. Traditionally prayed before and after a psalm or canticle, the antiphons use biblical imagery to proclaim titles of Christ and conclude with asking him to “come” in a particular way, expressing our longing and anticipation for his birth. Because each begins with “O,” they are referred to as the O Antiphons.
With different phrasing, they also appear in the verses of the beloved Advent hymn “O Come O Come Emmanuel.”

Week Four Prayer for Lighting the Advent Wreath Candle
Loving God, as we light this fourth candle of Advent, we give thanks for the love that took flesh and chose to dwell among us. In Mary, we see a love that says yes without fear. In Joseph, we see a love that trusts even when the way is unclear. As Christmas draws near, prepare our hearts to receive Your Son. Help us to share Christ’s love in our homes, our communities, and with all we encounter. We ask this through Jesus Christ,
Emmanuel, God-with-us. Amen.
