We are open and transparent in communicating with the public about sexual abuse of minors by clergy within the confines of respect for the privacy and the reputation of the individuals involved. This is especially so with regard to informing parishes and other diocesan entities directly affected by sexual abuse of a minor.
We publish the names of credibly accused diocesan priests since the diocese was established in 1968 on the diocesan website.
Bishop Gregory Parkes is collaborating with other members of the U.S. Bishops’ Conference to develop a concrete plan that will be implemented locally. They will launch an investigation into the questions surrounding former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick who has been accused of abusing minors and seminarians. They will introduce new and confidential channels for reporting complaints against bishops and they will advocate for more effective resolution of future complaints. These goals will be pursued according to three criteria: proper independence, sufficient authority and substantial leadership by laity.
