Welcome to the Mater Dei Giving Society

Inspired by the Blessed Mother, the Mater Dei Giving Society celebrates those whose generosity brings our diocesan mission—Courageously Living the Gospel—to vibrant life through acts of faith and service.

History

In 2018, the Diocese of Saint Petersburg embraced Courageously Living the Gospel, our mission statement that defines who we are and how we live our faith as Church. To honor those whose exceptional generosity supports this mission, Bishop Gregory Parkes established the Mater Dei Giving Society on November 9, 2020, during a special interactive live-stream event featuring evening prayer and conversation.

Named in honor of the Blessed Mother, the society recognizes individuals, families, and organizations whose gifts help our diocese put faith into action, making Christ’s love visible through service and good works. The launch marked Bishop Parkes’ first interactive live-stream event, during which he shared updates on diocesan goals: serving the poor, accompanying youth and young adults, and sharing our faith.

Since its founding, the Mater Dei Giving Society has been a community of faith-filled supporters committed to advancing these goals through ongoing engagement, fellowship, and shared mission.

Community & Connection: Celebrating Together

The society brings members together for events that blend faith, fellowship, and gratitude. These gatherings have included prayer services, relaxed barbecues with the Bishop, music, and meaningful conversation—allowing members to connect personally with leadership and one another.

As one attendee shared,

“It was so wonderful to spend time with not only our Bishop but other supporters of our diocese.”
Gulf Coast Catholic

These events offer heartfelt appreciation for the many ways members support our larger Church.

BBQ with the Bishop

Outdoor games, sizzling burgers and hot dogs, live music from Spirit FM 90.5, face painting, popcorn, and icees may sound like a parish festival—but they’re also the hallmarks of BBQ with the Bishop, a special gathering for members of the Mater Dei Giving Society.

Members come together with Bishop Gregory Parkes to enjoy fellowship, fun, and heartfelt expressions of gratitude, supported by diocesan ministry leaders, parish staff, the Knights of Columbus, and youth ministry teams.

“I was almost hesitant to accept the invitation because I wasn’t sure I would know anyone,” shared Rose Quartucci-Reid, a member of St. Michael Parish in Clearwater. “But two lovely couples from St. Benedict in Crystal River had one seat left at their table and asked me to join. They made me feel so comfortable, it felt like I had known them for years!”

Mater Dei Prayer Service

One cherished gathering for members of the Mater Dei Giving Society—both current and those soon to be honored—is a special prayer service held at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle. This afternoon of prayer, thanksgiving, and celebration draws hundreds of participants each year.

The service provides Bishop Gregory Parkes and his staff the opportunity to personally express gratitude. “Members of the Mater Dei Giving Society have made a commitment to the mission of our Diocese and spreading the Good News,” said Bishop Parkes. “I am so very grateful for what they have done, and continue to do.”
