The Third Sunday of Advent – Joy
The Third Sunday of Advent is known as Gaudete Sunday, meaning Rejoice!. The rose-colored candle and vestments remind us that the coming of Christ is very near. The focus is joy—not a fleeting feeling, but deep spiritual gladness rooted in God’s goodness. This week encourages us to recognize the ways God is at work in our lives and to share that joy with others, especially those who are burdened or discouraged.

The Bambinelli Tradition
The third Sunday of Advent is also known as “Bambinelli Sunday.” This Church tradition originated in Rome more than 50 years ago during the papacy of Pope St. Paul VI. Since the early 1970s, children and families have filled St. Peter’s Square to have the Baby Jesus figurine from their home nativity set blessed. During the pope’s Angelus address, he invites those present to hold up their Baby Jesus, also referred to as “Gesu Bambino” or “bambinelli”, for a special blessing. The blessing is not just over ceramic or wood, but over the families and homes eagerly awaiting the coming of Jesus.

Week Three Prayer for Lighting the Advent Wreath Candle
Heavenly Father, as we draw nearer to the celebration of Your Son’s birth, we give You thanks for the gift of joy that Christ brings into our lives and into our world. Not a passing joy based on circumstance, but a joy rooted in Your faithful love, Your promises fulfilled, and the hope we carry because You are with us. May this flame be a reminder that even in times of waiting,
uncertainty, or sorrow, Your joy is a steady light that cannot be overcome. Help us to share Your joy with others—in our homes, our parish, and all those You place in our path. Amen.
