Position Summary

The Catholic Cantor will serve as the primary liturgical musician for the Catholic community at MacDill Air Force Base Chapel. The Cantor will lead and accompany music for Masses, Holy Days, rehearsals, and other designated liturgical events, ensuring reverent and high-quality music ministry in alignment with Catholic liturgical directives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and accompany music at:
    • Weekend Masses (52 annually)
    • Holy Day Services (7 annually)
    • Christmas Masses (2 annually)
    • Triduum Services (2 annually)
    • Holy Week Services (3 annually)
    • Memorial/Funeral Services (up to 5 annually)
  • Conduct a rehearsal for all services in collaboration with the Chaplain and choir/musicians.
  • Select appropriate music consistent with the liturgical calendar and directives of the U.S. Bishops.
  • Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to services; complete sound checks at least 15 minutes before start.
  • Organize and support volunteer musicians and singers.
  • Maintain professional standards and foster a welcoming worship environment.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Music or equivalent training.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Cantor in a military chapel environment
  • Strong vocal ability, sight-reading, and proficiency in piano and guitar.
  • Knowledge of Catholic liturgy, Vatican II documents, and directives on liturgical music.
  • Ability to sing and play simultaneously, and to work with choirs/ensembles.
  • Must complete background checks (Archdiocese for the Military Services & Diocese of St. Petersburg).
