Position Title: On-Call Catholic Cantor
Location: MacDill Air Force Base Chapel, Tampa, FL

Position Summary

The On-Call Catholic Cantor will provide as-needed liturgical music support for the Catholic community at MacDill Air Force Base Chapel. This position ensures continuity of worship services in the absence of the primary cantor, covering weekend Masses, Holy Days, and special liturgical events. The backup cantor must be prepared to step in with professionalism and reverence, ensuring seamless liturgical music delivery in alignment with Catholic worship directives.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as cantor and accompanist when the primary cantor is unavailable.
• Lead and accompany music at:
  • Weekend Masses
  • Holy Day Services
  • Christmas, Triduum, and Holy Week services
  • Memorial/Funeral Services (as assigned)
• Conduct rehearsals prior to each service covered.
• Select music consistent with the liturgical calendar and Catholic directives.
• Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to services; complete sound checks 15 minutes prior.
• Collaborate with the Catholic Chaplain, parish staff, and volunteer musicians.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in Music or equivalent training.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Cantor in a military chapel environment
• Strong vocal ability, sight-reading, and proficiency in piano and guitar.
• Knowledge of Catholic liturgy, Vatican II documents, and directives on liturgical music.
• Ability to sing and play simultaneously, and to work with choirs/ensembles.
• Must complete background checks (Archdiocese for the Military Services & Diocese of St. Petersburg).
