POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Custodian will perform functions as needed to maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the parish facilities. This position is responsible for ensuring the church, office, hall, school, rectory, and grounds are clean, sanitary, and well-maintained to provide a welcoming environment for parishioners, staff, and visitors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Employee would be responsible for creating his/her own schedule to make sure all the expected areas are cleaned throughout the course of the week.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms daily, including restocking supplies (soap, paper towels, toilet paper)
- Vacuum, sweep, and mop all floors in designated areas
- Dust all surfaces including desks, tables, chairs, and windowsills
- Clean windows, mirrors, and glass surfaces
- Disinfect high-touch surfaces such as door handles, light switches, phones, and desks
- Empty trash receptacles and replace liners; transport waste to designated disposal areas
- Maintain cleanliness of the church sanctuary, including pews and kneelers
- Clean parish hall and meeting rooms after events as needed
- Perform general maintenance tasks in the church, office, school, rectory, and grounds
- Monitor and report cleaning supply inventory to the Maintenance Supervisor
- Report maintenance issues or repair needs to the Maintenance Supervisor promptly
- Assist parish staff with setup/breakdown of furniture and equipment for events as requested
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Required:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Reliable and punctual attendance
- Attention to detail and thoroughness in cleaning tasks
- Positive and respectful working relationship with staff, parishioners, and visitors
- Basic understanding of proper cleaning techniques and use of cleaning equipment
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Preferred:
- Previous custodial or janitorial experience
- Familiarity with commercial cleaning equipment and chemicals
- Basic facility maintenance knowledge
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and reach overhead
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 35 pounds regularly
- Ability to perform repetitive motions (sweeping, mopping, vacuuming)
- Ability to climb ladders and step stools safely
COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
- Successfully pass a Level II (FBI) criminal history background check prior to employment
- Complete Safe Environment Training (Protecting God’s Children) within the first 30 days of employment
- Comply with all policies and procedures of the Diocese of [Diocese Name] and St. Clement Catholic Church
- Maintain professional conduct both in person and on social media/online platforms
SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (20 hours per week)
