Reverend Sidney J. Figlia, S.D.B.

The Chancellor’s Office was informed of the passing of Reverend Sidney J. Figlia, S.D.B., 91, a member of the Salesians of Saint John Bosco, on Sunday, March 6, 2022, in St. Philip Residence at Mary Help of Christians Center, Tampa.  “Father Sid” was a native of Brooklyn, New York. Following graduation from high school, he served in the U.S. Army. He was discharged in January 1952 after reaching the rank of Sergeant. In September 1956, he moved to Newton, NJ to begin his life as a Salesian brother.  After the completion of the novitiate year, he made his first profession on September 8, 1958.  He took his final vows on June 27, 1964 and was ordained to the priesthood for the Salesian Order on June 1, 1968.  Father Sid spent a good portion of his religious life at St. John Bosco Parish, in Harvey, Louisiana, had other assignments, as well.

From 1976 to 1982, he served as Executive Director of the Salesian Boys Club, in East Boston, and from 1987 to 1992, he served in Boston as Director of Don Bosco Tech. He also served at Mary Help of Christians School, Tampa, from 1962 to 1964, and from 1970 to 1972. He was assigned to Mary Help of Christians Center, where he served from 2011 to 2015.

Father Sid moved to the St. Philip Residence at Mary Help of Christians Center in Tampa in 2015. After a short stay in the hospital, he returned home to St. Philip Residence, where he died peacefully.
All funeral services were held at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Tampa.  Burial will take place at a later date.
